The competition ends. The kids are sad at saying goodbye

The History making 2011 Under 15s State team

Dear friends

Today was the grand final day.

Everyone had to be at the hall at 1030 am to get ready for the proceedings.

The hall was set up with just the main court and chairs around the court for the spectators.

After getting coffee for the organisers, I set up my viewing point at the upper floor galley to get a good view.

Yes, I have been making a coffee run for the organisers who are all great volunteers and who do not ask for much. So, I try to grab a few coffees when I reach the court and let them fight it out as to who gets what. Hey, I only have 1 pair of hands and can only carry so many coffees.

We are thankful for what the organisers do for the competition. They organise the hall, ready for the games even before any one arrives. Everything works like clock work and Badminton WA should be proud of how they managed this competition.

The order of event is for the plate events to be played. The girls plate was won by Janet Son, a dimunitive little girl from NSW.

The main event then took place which was a final between Grace from Queensland and Joy Lai. Grace is seeded 2 and Joy seeded 1. The results spoke for themselves with Joy beating Grace in 3 sets at 14-21 21-11 and 21-18. It was a close fight. Grace played admirably but could not finish off the game although she won the first set.

The girls singles winners

The next game was the plate between WA's Dennis Zhao and Justin Lee from NSW. This was again a 3 setter with the first  set at 23-21 to Dennis. The score does not show that Dennis came back from behind to win. The 2nd set was won by Justin at 16-21. Coach Paul asked Dennis if he felt tired at the break. For the first time, Dennis said "No". You could see the determination in his eyes. He proceeded to finish the game 21-12 as Justin had lost all his energy. Dennis has improved so much as a player. And I am told his studies are also great. He has great prospects both as a player and as a student.

The next game was the main game between Austin Yu seeded 1 and WA's Amos Yi seeded 2. Amos had lost to Austin in 2 sets for the team event. His parents were keeping their hopes high that Amos could turn that around for the individual event. The game started well and Amos got ahead before both boys suddenly found themselves in a deuce position. The lead changed a few times and Amos' dad and mum had their hearts skip a few times too. Austin finally finished the game at 25-23. It was so close and Amos had a couple of match points but could not convert.

Well, it was up to Amos to see if he could equalise on the 2nd set. He started well but then again found himself trailing at the 11 point break. He caught up a few times but could not close the gap before losing at 21-19. That was the end of the campaign for Amos with a silver medal for his efforts. I am sure he wanted a gold and he will have to work harder the next time to get it. His parents know that he tried everything but this time, it was not his year. Even his sister was at the stand and you could see her heartbreak for her brother's loss.

The Boy's singles winners

The next plate event was the girl's doubles plate. Hera Jim and Lily Rigg beat Siobhan Dang and Mandy Li in 3 sets in another close fight.

The next event was the girl's double between WA's Eunice Lee and Phing Teo seeded 2 against Joy Lai and Grace Ngiam seeded 1. The no. 1 seeds were too strong and they won WA 21-19 and 21-10. This is Eunice's and Phing's first individual silver. Who knows,  the next one may be gold. However, there is lots of hard work ahead. Are they ready for it?

Girls doubles winners

The boy's doubles plate was between Sagar Kumar and Ewaldo v Benjamin Han and Mark Moriaty. Sagar and Ewaldo were too strong finishing the match in 2 sets.

The main boy's double was between Matthew Chan and Austin Yu v Eddie Luk and Andre Zopf. Matthew Chan and Austin won the first after a close fight at 23-21 and the 2nd at 21-16.

Boys doubles winners

The mixed double's  plate event was between Eric Qi and Adriana Phan against John Taing and Tylah Bruhn. Eric and Adriana won in 2 straight sets.

The final game was the mixed doubles between Andre Zopf and Joy Lai the no. 1 seed. Julian Lam and Grace Ngiam the 2nd seeds were the opponent. Remembering my son Tyz and Sanoja had just lost to the 1st seed in 3 sets the day before, I wondered what the standard of the finals would be. It proved an exciting 3 setter which dinged donged between the 2 opponents so many times I am glad they are not my children.  Andre Zopf and Joy Lai finally won the 3rd set at 21-19 although they lost the 1st set.

Mixed doubles winners

The winners are listed below and I was pleased to see Tyz and Sanoja had been recorded as 3/4 winners despite not having played together before this competition.

That was the end of the matches. The floor was then taken by the MC.

One of our keenest and most qualified umpire Greg Vellacourt (a fellow lawyer) was honoured for his work as a referee. He well deserves the recognition and was in fact my tutor when I did the umpire course myself with my wife.

At the end of the carnival, the players ranking for the tournament was announced. Amos from WA was ranked 2nd after Austin Yu. Edward Fan of WA was ranked 6 even though he is a regional player. He did well in the individual event by beating one of the seeded players.

Phing was ranked 3rd and Eunice was ranked 5th.

This has been a good year for WA. Again we have to thank all the coaches who have assisted the players.

The team has made history by winning a bronze medal. There has been 2 silver medals won by the team with Dennis winning the plate. It bodes well for the future of WA badminton.

After the competition, the kids are allowed to let down their hair. This year, a night out at the Warwick Bowling alley was organised. The children had some light snacks before having  their bowling games. You can feel the teenage hormones with the girls screaming and running all over the place and the boys playing it cool.

The parents are also able to socialise for once without worrying about training, feeding the kids etc.  At the end, the players have a hard time saying good bye to their new found friends. Some tears are shed. Facebooks will be updated.

So that is the end of another Under 15s competition. 6 days of intensive badminton with the players giving their best. Parent's feeling every feeling under the sun and moon.

If you ask the kids if they will do it again next year. They all shout "YES".

They do not have to worry about their parents having to continue ferrying them to and from training. They do not think about the hard work preparing the logistics for taking part including food, accommodation, transport etc (including dealing with some parents that are less than agreeable).

I am not even mentioning the coaching fees.

If you ask the parents if they would support their children if they want to take part  again next year, I bet the answer will also be "YES". All because we love our children and we want them to achieve as much as they can in their life.

Sports at a competitive level, even if it is just at a National level is a commitment. I can imagine if some of these kids are picked to play for Australia. A few of them have and the commitment is even higher. One of WA's top player used to have to fly every weekend to the Eastern States to train. To balance life, studies and their sports is an amazing feat which will well help them when they are adults.

The friendships they have forged with their fellow players will always be treasured.

I was most touched when I was speaking to Mark Duxbury, the organiser and chair for this competition. We were looking at the digital photos taken  by the professional photographer. Amos was looking to see what photos they had of him and there were quite a few good shots. Mark said to Amos that he should buy the photos as they would comprise of some of his best memories when he gets older. I did not expect such sentimentality from Mark, who at the best of times always appears gruff and upset at the players. :) Just joking Mark.

Any way I do agree with Mark. These are going to make up the best memories of the players' youth. So to all you players, do enjoy yourself reading this blog when you are older.

As for me, I think I may now have to start an Under 17s Blog page as that seems to be where my boys are heading next. Good night for the year.

Comments from a friend

Dear Raymond,

What a nerve wrecking day it must have really been! I can literally feel the adrenalin rushing from the players and especially you parents under such intense pressure and high dramas!!

I am completely overwhelmed by such display of determination and fighting spirits from these young players and the vociferous display of support from you parents and well-wishers urging them on. Wish I was there to witness this event.

For those kids who did not manage to advance further in the tournament, they can be very proud of themselves for having fought so gallantly. And for those who are still in the running, I wish them all the best!!

Cheers,
Freddie

Dear all,

Sorry have not been able to read email till Wednesday cos After Saturday, I literally slept till 11am from mon to wednesday! Mentally tired and nerve breaking for the five days of tournament! Amos also slept till 1pm everyday! He is also mentally n physically tired!

Indeed our kids have done well and made us proud this time in the under 15 championship!  I saw the great changes n improvement in all the eight kids in terms of courage, self-confidence, manners n fighting spirit.

When Olivia told me she is going to play against Joy Lai the next day, I told her:"so what if she is Joy Lai, you go in and take 15 points from her ok?" she smiled shyly n nodded her head. Though she lost in 2 sets, she managed to get 15 points from Joy on the second set, point by point with much courage n determination! I saw the satisfaction in her eyes after the game. Indeed money can't buy this kind of experience!

Silvi was incredibly good with guarding her front like a hawk! She served n played so well that even she was surprise at herself at the end of every matches!

Xiang played courageously like a tiger though he was small n was constantly under attacked by the opponents. He told his mom that this tournament was very fun n he wishes to join in the next one!

Dennis was a quiet achiever n he surprised everyone with his determination in winning to the top of the plate, which was not easy. He indeed has gone up to another level!

Phing n Eunice did really well in doubles too though the opponents were much stronger. Given the fact that phing still did not fully recovered from her injury, she did really well in getting ranked third! Eunice too fought very hard to get ranked 6th! Eunice also grew in strength and perseverance!

I must say Tyzton should be crowned mixed double "Pro" from this tournament! He and his partner(1st time playing together) could have such breathtaking performance without Practicing I cannot imagine what they could do if they did! He played really well this time, it was a bliss just to watch him play!

Amos though lost in his individual event to Austin Yu, he commented that his biggest disappointment was not losing to him but it was the fact that he can't get an I-pad from us as a prize! Poor boy! I must say that he has fought hard in the team events playing mostly rubber sets in doubles n mixed doubles n later in his individual events too. He told me just now that he was very tired on last Wednesday already playing three events everyday mostly rubber sets. He did not tell me last week but even if he tells me this, I did not think I can help him either.  I think most importantly, he has grown much in strength, perseverance and maturity through this tournament and we are very happy for him!

Thanks Raymond for the wonderful
Job of blogging! I enjoyed reading it. It was like instant re-play in my head! After reading the last day's blog, tears of joy n relieved came and I slept so well that I could only get up almost noon time! Then piles of housework awaited me! Like what hong Mei said:"this whole week's housework already piled up so high!"

Touk Reei (Amos's mum)

Hello all Parents,

It has been a very busy, exciting and at times, heart stopping week for all of us over the Val Nesbitt and Under 15 carnival.

We should be proud that the team has ended up with the bronze medal for the Val Nesbitt Carnival, which is the best result that WA has achieved since this carnival started 7 years ago.  It is great that we have also won the silver medals for the National Boys singles and the Girls doubles events, as well as the plate championship for the Boys singles event.  While WA juniors had won plate events in previous National U15 Championships, the silver medals in the main draw was also a first for WA.  All of the juniors in the team has put in a great effort and have done WA proud with their achievements.

I would like to thank all the parents for their support and team work over the carnival with transporting the kids, cheering for the team, helping each other and myself with all that we have to do over the past week.

A big "Thank you" to our State Team Coach, Ai Ling, for preparing, coaching, encouraging and working out the strategies over the carnival.

Highs and Lows of the day

Dear friends and parents

What a stressful day for all the parents. The parents have endured the highs and lows of the day. Experienced anxiety and near stroke, experienced relief and joy.

The first game today was between Amos and Huaidong Tang. Amos was able to quickly despatch Tang in 2 sets.

Joy Lai then beat Olivia 21-9 and 21-15. Olivia fought bravely but was not strong enough.

Phing Teo won her game against Julia Nicolas without much fanfare. Eunice was also able to beat Tylah Brun in 2 easy sets.

In the plate event, Xiang beat Ewaldo also in 2 sets. Dennis also beat Daniel Ho in 2 sets in the plate event.

Amos and Dennis had their doubles game and despatched Daniel Choo and Emerson Kristic in 2 sets without any problem although the 2nd set at 21-19 was looking a bit dangerous.

In the girls double, Eunice and Phing were also too strong against Alice Lorincz and Adriana Phan beating them in 2 sets.

I then had to witness the mixed doubles game between Tyz and Sanoja against Amos and Phing who are of course in the same WA teams and have the same coaches namely Paul Kong and Nick. Ailing also could not coach them as they are WA. So there were no coaches there as everyone excused themselves.

So it was up to my son Jaz to coach them. The first set started badly for Tyz and Sanoja with them losing 14-21. Tyz was not on fire and I told my wife that it would probably be a short day and I could get back to the office. The 2nd set was a breakthrough for Tyz and Sanoja with them winning 22-20 from behind. My god, my heart was pumping. The final set saw Sanoja and Tyz fired up winning 21-17. That was a great start for the day as Amos and Phing are seeded 5 of 8. This was an upset as Tyz and Sanoja had only had their 3rd game together. I had to call the office to cancel my appointments.

Likewise for Dennis and  Eunice, they also managed a win against Kristic and Josephine Liu in 2 sets.

The next game was between Amos and Matthew Chan. The first game went to Amos easily at 21-12. This was despite Amos being caught foot faulted in 3 occasions. At the 2nd set, Amos somehow lost concentration and lost 14-21. His father who was beside me was frantic. Such are the emotions felt by a parent.I wonder if Lee Chong Wei or Ling Dang's parents ever feel that way.  Luckily Amos pulled up his socks and finished the game at 21-14 to the relief of his parents.

In the meantime, Phing also won Lee Yen Khoo in 2 straight sets. Eunice was having problems containing Grace Ngiam. Eunice went down 21-14 and 21-15 without any shame.

In the next doubles game, Amos and Dennis  lost to the 3/4 seeds, Eddie Luk and Andre Zopf.  This was again a 3 setter and Dennis and Amos went down fighting.

In the girls doubles, Phing and Eunice managed an easy win against Leeyen Khoo and Josephine Liu in 2 sets.

Xiang and Olivia also managed a win against Allen Roy and Angelique Agulto in 2 sets in their plate match.

The next game was between Tyz and Sanoja against Austin Yu and Mandy Liu who are seeded 3 of 4. Tyz and Sanoja raised their game and beat them 21-19 and 21-18. That was a good result which meant they were now in the semi finals.

Eunice and Dennis also won their matches against Kunal Patil and Alice Wu. They had a tougher time having to endure a rubber and giving their parents heartburn. The first set actually went to 29-27 which was amazing.

In the plate, Xiang and Olivia were now beating Calvin Lai and Jessica Li in 2 comfortable sets.

WA's players were managing well and holding their heads high.

The next match was between Amos and Jonathan Sha who is seeded 3/4. Amos won the first set 25-23 after nearly losing it. His father was beside himself.  Amos was foot faulted a few times and lost 3 points.  The 2nd set was bad and Amos lost 15-21 with his dad shouting at him to focus.

The rubber set was a thriller. It was a point for point match until point 14 before Amos finally broke free to finish to the relief of all his supporters. I could see the anxious faces of his parents. Amos now plays for gold or silver against Austin Yu.

Phing was not having much luck battling Joy Lai the number 1 seed. She went down fighting at 21-12 and 21-16.

For the plate, Xiang again beat Damien Blaga in 2 sets. Dennis also beat Julian Lam in 2 sets in the plate event.

Tyz and Sanoja then commenced their mixed doubles game against Joy Lai and Andre Zopf who are seeded no. 1. Could they get another upset victory? The first set did not bode well for Tyz and Sanoja. They lost 21-9. For the 2nd set, they found their stride and won at 19-21 after a close fight. I was breathless watching their game. They had come from behind.

The 3rd set was very close with the teams matching each other point for point before the No. 1 seeds broke away. At times they were 4 points ahead yet Tyz and Sanoja never gave up and closed the gap. They had to close the gap on more than 3 occasions before finally losing at 21-17. It was so close. That marked the end of the season for Tyz and Sanoja. They should feel proud as they have done their best and fought with all their hearts. They were not intimidated and I am so proud of them. They should be ranked 3/4 now for their doubles game.

Tyz and Sanoja vs Joy Lai and Andre Zopf in the semifinals

Dennis and Eunice were also not having a good time as they went down 21-12 and 21-14 to Grace and Julian Lam the No. 2 seeds.  Their parents should be proud of them too for reaching the semi finals.

In the plate events, Xiang lost to Justin lee in 2 sets and he looked so disappointed.
The last match was between Titus of WA and Dennis for the plate.  Dennis managed a 2 set win against Titus despite Titus fighting hard.

In the mixed doubles, Xiang and Olivia also lost in 2 sets to Eric Qi and Adriana Phan. That is also the end of the season for Xiang and Olivia. They can leave knowing they have done well. They both have big hearts despite their sizes. Watch out for next year when they should be bigger.

We were also lucky to have dedicated coaches like Ailing, Paul, Nick and Himanshu who stayed the whole day supporting the players.

The WA players who still have games are Amos in his singles and Phing and Eunice in their doubles. We wish them luck.

The individual events starts

Dear friends and readers,

Yes, I have taken another day off from the office to be with my sons and wife. She still has to umpire.

I have set up office next to the Li-ning dealership with Andrew Chai. Andrew has been supporting the boys and the team for many years. Infact Andrew was the first person to spot the boys' potential and gave them their first coaching tips.

Setting up the office at the Victor stand means I can continue with my legal work and still watch the games and still blog. How's that for multi tasking.

Any way, enough of advertising for the sponsors.

Andrew Chai, agent for Li-ning and myself

Tyz's 1st game was against Gilbert Choi from the regional team. He had no problems finishing the game in straight sets. He will have a more difficult 2nd game against Eric Qi.

Dennis played Patel from the regional team. Although playing as hard as he could, he was unable to beat Patel. He has to be content with the plate event. The plate event is a consolation prize so that all players are assured of at least 2 games in a competition.

Tyz and Titus played their first doubles game against Kumar and Ewaldo from the regional NSW silver team. The first set was won by Tyzton and Titus after a close call. Tyz won the game with a flick serve that surprised the other player.

The 2nd set was a closer fight. Tyzton again flicked the last serve to win the match. Maybe I should not blog about that as it may warn the other opponents.

Meanwhile Xiang also lost his singles game to a NSW 2 player. He will have to see if he can win the plate.

Olivia, as usual the quiet achiever has won her singles game and progressed to the next stage.

Amos, has been ranked 2 and does not have to play till the afternoon.

One of the purpose of this blog is to allow future players and parents to understand what it is like to take part in a national competition. The blog recounts how the team prepares, how the team travels and organises itself while training and away from home.

It is a bit daunting for any first time parent taking part in one of these competitions. Luckily, WA hosted this event which has been taking place since 2005.

When I took part in last year's competition, we had to organise the food, the sleeping arrangements, the laundry and everything needed to keep the kids ready for the daily battles.

Coming back to the issue of ranking. The reasons for being ranked is to ensure that in the individual events, you get an easy  route to the finals. So the ranked players will always play the weaker players. If you are not ranked, you will have a harder route to the championship game facing more opponents.

Silvi managed an easy win against Cindy Cheung and progress to the 2nd round.

Tyzton and his partner Titus Tan had their 1st doubles game together against Sagar and Ewaldo from the regional team. There was quite a fight but they managed a 21-17 and 21-16 win to progress to the 2nd round.

Xiang had his doubles game with Edward and they also managed a 21-19 and 21-16 win.

Silvi meanwhile had teamed up with Sanoja from the Territories in their doubles game. They again had an easy win of 21-8 and 21-4.

Olivia also had a new partner called Chelsea who played for the regional team. They won their first doubles game together beating Stephanie Fan and Janice Ho. Tyzton then played his first doubles game with new partner Sanoja.

What happens usually is that the players find their own partners from their own state team. If they run out of partners from their state team, they will put down in their participation forms that they are looking for a doubles partner. The form says PR or partner required.  It then is luck of the draw as to who you get.

Tyz and Sanoja were able to beat Josh and Tessa from the regional team. This was their first mixed doubles together and luckily it was an easy game.

Titus partnered Silvi to win against John Taing and Tylah Bruhn from Victoria 2 in straight sets.

Tyzton had his 2nd  singles game aganst Eddie Luk from Victoria 2's team. Tyzton was unable to beat Eddie losing 21-12 and 21-19. This means he is out of the singles challenge. I could see his disappointment.

Quiet achiever Olivia won her 2nd game against Anamarie Barreto 21-6 and 21-3.

Amos played his 1st singles game as no. 2 seed. He easily won 21-6 amd 21-13.

Phing also played her 1st singles game against Janice Ho winning by a wide margin.

The next singles game for the WA players was between Jessica Lai and Silvi from NSW Storm. Silvi fought hard for 3 sets but lost.

Eunice then had her game against Nicolle Min from NSW Thunder winning 21-15 and 21-15.

Xiang won his plate event against Bowen Viravon at 21-5 and 21-6.

The No.1. doubles boys seed is actually Amos and Dennis. They had their 1st game against 2 regional players winning easily.

The difference between a state team and a regional team is that the regional teams are made  up of players who have missed out on selection to a state team.

Titus and Tyz had their 2nd doubles game against Eric Qi and John Taing, players from Victoria's No. 1 and 2 team.

They could not win losing 21-16 and 21-17.

Xiang and his doubles partner also lost to Matthew Chan and Austin Yu who are ranked as No. 2 doubles.

Silvi and Sanoja also lost their doubles game to Tifany Ho and Janet Son who are ranked 3/4.

Olivia and Chelsea also lost to Leeyen Khoo and Josephine Liu who are ranked 3/4.

Eunice and Phing who are ranked 2 easily beat Siobhan and Mandy Li.

Xiang and Olivia also lost their doubles game to Huadong Tang and Tiffany Ho who are ranked 5/8.

Amos and Phing who are ranked 5/8 also beat Tony Zhang and Ysabel easily.

Tyzton and Sanoja beat Sonny Li and Lily Rigg from Victoria 2. They now get to play Amos and Phing tomorrow. This should be interesting.

I will be sitting with Amos' mum and dad and cheering quietly.

Dennis and Eunice have also won their mixed doubles game against Clare Lo and William Liang from NSW Lightning.

Silvi and Titus remain in fighting by winning Gilbert Choi and Rebecca Li.

I was not able to view most of the games as I had to catch up on my office work.

Tomorrow I can only look forward to seeing how far Tyz can progress with his mixed doubles game.

I was hoping for more but know that there is still lots more training for him before we see his best.

Thanks to AiLing and Paul Kong , the coaches who turned up to advise the children. Their advice as always is invaluable.

History made but we only managed a bronze after fighting all the way

Dear friends and readers,

I was having dinner with my wife and sons planning how the final day would progress to see if the team can win the gold.

The day started well except there was this bugging question as to why we were being asked to play at the courts where the NSW and Victorian teams had been playing the last 2 days. It would have been better if a neutral court was selected by the organisers.

The 1st game was lost by Xiang and Amos. The boys were quite tense. They managed to turn the tables around and won the next set 14-21. The final match went to a tie break and Xiang played the winner to the relief of all the players, parents, coach, manager and supporters.

Meanwhile Eunice and Phing also won their doubles but with less stress.

The next game was between Austin Yu and Amos. Amos had just finished a 3 setter and the advice to him was to have a rest. He refused and insisted on playing straight away. He proceeded to lose 21-17 after fighting valiantly. This was looking crucial. He lost the 2nd set again at 21-18 although he looked more comfortable for the 2nd set.

Phing managed a win against Tiffany Ho making it 3-1 in our favour.

The next game was between Eunice Lee and Janet Son. Eunice fought strongly but could not win losing at 21-19 and 21-17. What a waste. We were now in trouble.

Dennis came on next and played Jonathan Sha. He got off to a good start but started trailing at 15 before losing 21-19.  The 2nd set was also a loss at 21-17.

This meant we were 3 all.  Amos and Phing then played their mixed doubles. They were unable to find themselves and lost 21-11 and 21-16.  They just could not find the fire. However Phing and Amos have been the pillar of the team winning most of their matches to get the team where they are.

It was then left to Tyzton and Silvi. Tyzton and Silvi had not played any games the whole morning. There was no time to warm up and they proceeded to lose 21-6 in the first set. The 2nd set was a closer game but they still lost at 21-14. What a waste for the WA team.

We now had to win Victoria 1 convincingly. Was it possible. Were we aiming too high? I always believe in aiming higher and thinking positive. That is how I have lived my life. You can only disappoint yourself if you set yourself a low goal. Aim for the stars, and if you have tried your best and not get there, it does not matter if you have tried. I try at all times to inculcate that to my boys.

The game against Victoria

We all had a rest to re assess the situation. The voices were hoarse from all the shouting.

The first game was again played by Xiang and Amos. Xiang has been a stable player producing results when needed. Was he able to get Amos across the line. The 1st game was close at 21-19. It was close and both boys played with their hearts. They managed to win the 2nd set at 21-19. It was a close call.  They then proceeded to play the decider. A win would set the tone for the next few matches.  Despite playing with all their hearts, they lost at 21-18.

We could not ask more of Xiang.

The next match was between Eunice and Phing against Joy Lai and Alice Wu. It was a very very close fight but WA lost 23-21 and 22-20. The girls tried their best but could not get over the line.

Amos then played next against Andre Zopf. Amos won the first set at 21-18 but had to battle all the way. Andre is the tallest boy in the comp. The next set could have been won but Amos lost concentration and lost at 21-16. That meant another 3 setter and you could see his parents getting palpitations. Amos valiantly went on to win at 20-22. He has been the star of the competition for WA.

We were now 2-1 down. Phing could not win against her arch rival Joy Lai or recreate her brilliance from last year when she beat Joy in 3 sets.

It was down to Dennis and Eunice to see if they could get us a better medal then bronze.

It was not to be. Dennis fought hard but lost in 2 sets to Kunal Patel. Dennis played his heart out and has contributed so much to his team quietly.

Eunice then played Alice Wu but was unable to control Alice losing 21-14 and 21-16.

The mixed doubles was again played by Amos and Phing. They played well but could not win after fighting to deuce and losing 24-22 in the 1st set. They managed to win the 2nd set at 18-21. However they ran out of steam and lost the last set.

It was the final game and we knew we had to be content with bronze.Tyzton and Silvi still went out to play with their hearts. They won the 1st set at 22-24 after many close calls and a lot of diving by Tyzton. The 2nd set was won by Victoria at 21-19. This was another nail biter but they lost finally at 21-14.

That was the end of the team event and we made history by winning bronze. The history would have been sweeter if we had won a better medal.

The players have tried their best and the supporters today were great. We also need to acknowledge the contribution of Olivia although she had to sit out both matches today. Maybe playing her might have been a better choice for the mixed doubles. But, that is a question I am unable to answer.

All the players have shown character well above and beyond their ages.

Many friends and parents turned up today to support the team and we thank them. We just wished a better show had been given but they all know the players played with their hearts and gave everything they had.

Thanks to Ailing for all her coaching and encouragement during the games. She should be proud to have brought the team to a bronze medal and making history.

Nick Kidd was also around to give advice and we have to thank him too.

We also need to thank Annie the umpire and Steve our manager. Good work guys.

That's not the end though. We now have the individual events. That goes on for another 3 days and promises to be as exciting.

So see you guys there tomorrow.

Ps. I came home and saw my boy's school report cards. Despite all their training and competitions, they are still doing well at school. That is such a comfort and I know they are going to do well in their adult lives when they can balance work and play.

Comments from Freddie Chew and Zul all the way from Malaysia who have been following the team:

Dear Raymond,
Never mind about the Bronze. What really matters is that your son, Tyz and his fellow team mates have made history for WA by emerging as medal contenders for the Under 15's campaign and all of you ought to be very proud of their achievements. So once again, "Well Done Kids!!"

And as for you parents and also those who are involved in one way or the other in this tournament, I must say your support and encouragement to the players are both heartening and inspiring.

And as for you Raymond, your unstinting effort in providing a continuous coverage of the events in your blog despite your heavy work load and busy schedules is equally to be commended as it sure gets me all interested in wanting to know how the kids are progressing?

And last but not least, here's wishing Tyz and his fellow team mates all the very best in the individual events.

Kind regards,
Freddie

Congratulations to the WA team!! You guys made history for WA.
