Some great photos from Henky

Dear readers

We were lucky that Henky, Cindy's dad accompanied the team. He is a keen photographer. Please see here some of the shots he took for the event.

It has been difficult and time consuming uploading the photos, so I have selected just a few.

The individual events

Dear readers

After fighting hard for WA , the players drag their tired bodies in for the individual events.

Boys singles:

Robin Fu won his first set against Nicolas Fu in 2 sets but had to bow out to 5th seed Austin Chen in 2 sets.

Justin Lim also won his first set against Egwin Lau but had to exit the singles after losing in 2 sets to Ryan Lei.

Timothy had to go to the plate after losing to K Lew. Timothy ended up winning the plate. He brings back a medal to encourage him further in this badminton journey supported by mum Surya whom he better thank.

All 3 boys have played and fought hard for WA. Their parents should be proud of what they have achieved. I can see them in the Under 17s team fighting hard.

Girl's singles:

Cindy beat Sophia Lim in 2 sets. She then beat E Tay in 2 easy sets to get to the quarters. She lost in 2 sets to Sydney Go in the QTRS. Sydney was the eventual winner. Cindy has progressed so much as a young player. She is more serious now and more competitive. I have seen her changed from a petulant young girl to a serious player. Good on you Cindy.

Joanne beat A Watkinson in 2 sets. She then lost Y Zhang again in 2 sets. I am sure her young body is tired out from the team event. Never mind, her badminton journey has just started. Her strong spirit will see her go far.

Shakti also won her first set against B Li before losing to X Gu in 2 sets. This is another young girl that will continue to  represent WA and get stronger.  I am hopeful her supportive family will ensure that she gives her best for WA for future events.

Mixed doubles:

Robin Fu and R Nugroho won their first set but had to exit after losing to D Batra and E Zhao in 2 sets.

Justin and Shakti did well progressing to  the 3rd round before losing to A Ooi and P Kustiandi in 2 sets.

Tim and Joanne had a better fight. They progressed to the Qtrs before losing to Jack Yu and Y Zhang
in 2 sets. Jack Yu and  Y Zhang were the eventual winners.

Boys doubles:

Robin and Justin went to the plate after losing to L Li and Winston Li in 2 sets. They won the plate and go home with a medal and a smile. Good on you boys. Remember to give your all.

Tim teamed with A Ooi. They lost in the Qtrs to K Goh and Jack Yu in 3 sets.K Goh and Jack Yu were the eventual winner.  So boys, be proud of what you have done.

Girls doubles:

Carina and Joanne lost to Sydney Go and Y Zhang in 2 sets. Sydney and Zhang were the eventual winners. Joanne and Carina won the plate and will be consoled.

Shakti and Cindy had a better run. They reach the Qtrs before losing to J Lee and E Zhao.

So, what have the team achieved:

They narrowly lost a team bronze but gave their all. This experience will bode well for their badminton future.

In the individual events the players had 3 plate winners. Not a simple feat and still to be celebrated.

I believe the players have just returned. I wish them the best in their badminton journey. Good luck all and remember to thank your parents for their support.

Thanks too to the coach, manager and umpire for their support. Till the next Under 15s tournament. Night.

The fight for bronze

Dear readers

WA finds itself in familiar territory fighting for bronze.

We have often fought for bronze against Vic 2, NSW 2 and SA. Sometimes, we win and there is great joy. Sometimes, WA loses and there are times there have been tears after close fights before giving away the bronze.

A few times, we have managed silver.

This  day was one of the tearful ones for the WA as I can see how close the fights were.

Tim lost in 3 sets and must be devastated. Justin Lim also lost in 3 sets. This is his first state team and I am sure he has given his all.

Joanne lost in 3 sets.

Knowing Joanne, I know she would have pushed herself to exhaustion and still fought for WA. What a brave girl. This will surely affect her individual games. Her selfless effort will see her triumph in real life.

Representing WA is an honour and all players who give their best for WA disregarding personal glory in their individual events are to be applauded. So thanks Tim and Justin for your 3 sets fight even if you lost.

Joanne and Tim again fought 3 sets in their mixed doubles.

These WA players have given their all for WA. I am sure the parents, coach and manager were screaming their hearts out.

The game was so close. If any of the players had won 1 extra match, we would have won bronze.

It was not meant to be. I am sure the players have matured based on this team experience.

They will know they have fought for WA. Maybe 1 day, they will fight for Australia.

These losses may feel painful and raw now, however, they will shape the WA young players and will surely make them better young persons.

Vic won gold and the silver went to NSW 1.  Coming 4th in an event with 9 teams is not an easy feat.

Let's see what the individual events hold for them.

WA vs Vic 1

Dear readers

The fight against Vic 1 was not good. Losing 0-8 shows how strong Vic 1 is.

The low scores may indicate our players are now very tired.

That means they now fight SA for a bronze.

Do they have enough fuel in the tank?

WA vs NSW Thunder

Dear readers

The afternoon was going to be a real test for the WA players.

Playing NSW 1 is never easy and we have always had a hard time trying to beat them.

This was a good fight but WA was not strong enough. Our boys's singles was not strong enough.

For a change, the WA girls fought well and did well for WA beating the NSW girls in the singles. Great work Joanne and Cindy,

It is usually the WA boys winning and the WA girls losing to NSW. Good to see our girls are  girls are getting stronger.

However, the WA boys were too strong as can be seen by the doubles game where we did not win a single one.

I am sure the WA team gave their best. Joanne played a 3 setter and must be very tired by now.

Good fight.

WA vs Combined team

Dear readers

The WA players were tested today playing a combined team. The 5/3 victory was close and there were a few 3 setters.

I guess the Combined teams were from NT and NSW.

WA vs Vic Demons

Dear readers

Again, WA had a good day beating Vic's 2nd team soundly.  As I mentioned earlier, very often WA has to play the Vic and NSW 2nd team for a bronze.

This means that WA has a good chance to medal.

The team event 2018 WA vs NSW Storm

Dear readers

I have been away on a cruise in Europe during the time the Val Nesbit and Individual events were being played. That has restricted any ability to blog let alone follow the events. There is no connection when you are at sea!!!.

So here are the belated results.

WA played NSW 2nd team and did well with a 7/1 victory. Sometimes, WA even finds it hard to beat the 2nd team. So that was a good start for the team.

This would have given confidence to the WA team , especially those on their first state team.
